Privacy Policy

Last updated May 29, 2026

Freestyle is a local-first, open-source voice dictation app. It is built so your voice never has to leave your device. This policy explains what we collect — and the much longer list of what we don't.

The short version

  • By default, your audio is transcribed on your device and is never sent to us or anyone else.
  • You don't need an account to use Freestyle.
  • The app ships with no analytics or telemetry — we don't watch how you use it.
  • If you choose a cloud transcription model, your audio goes to that provider, under their terms, not ours.

What we don't collect

Your recordings and transcripts stay on your computer. The desktop app has no built-in account system, sign-in, or background reporting, so we have no servers receiving your voice, your text, or a log of what you dictate.

What we do collect

We keep this deliberately small, and it's limited to the few places we interact with you online:

  • Website: when you visit this site, our hosting provider processes standard request data (such as your IP address and browser type) to serve pages and protect against abuse. We do not use this to build a profile of you.
  • Email: if you contact us, we keep the message and your address so we can reply.
  • Downloads: aggregate, non-identifying download counts may be recorded by the platforms that host our releases (for example GitHub).

Optional cloud models

Freestyle lets you bring your own model and route transcription to a third-party provider — for example OpenAI, Groq, Anthropic, Google, Deepgram, or ElevenLabs. This is always your choice and is off by default.

When you enable a cloud model, the audio you dictate is sent directly from your device to that provider using your own API key. We do not proxy, see, or store that audio. Your use of those services is governed by each provider's own privacy policy and terms.

Cookies

This website uses only the essential cookies needed for it to function. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.

How we share data

We do not sell your personal data, and we don't share it for advertising. The limited data described above may be processed by service providers (such as our website host and email provider) solely to operate Freestyle, or disclosed if required by law.

Security

Keeping transcription on-device is itself our strongest privacy measure — data that never leaves your machine can't be breached on ours. For the small amount of information we do handle, we use reasonable technical and organizational safeguards. No method of transmission or storage is ever completely secure, however, and we can't guarantee absolute security.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, or delete the personal data we hold about you, or to object to its processing. Because we hold so little, most requests are quick to honor — just email us and we'll help.

Children

Freestyle is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as Freestyle evolves. When we do, we'll revise the date at the top of this page, and significant changes will be noted on our website.
